As a crossroads for European trade, the Brussels Region is directly affected by the general increase in goods transport, mainly by road. Every day, 16,000 trucks and 26,000 vans enter and circulate in the Region. Although goods transport accounts for only a small percentage of traffic, it is thought to be responsible for up to 30% of traffic-related air pollution. Moreover, it poses problems in terms of noise, congestion and safety. It is also a crucial issue for the supplying of businesses and the population. Projected production and consumption patterns suggest that an enormous increase in flows can be expected in the years to come, making it necessary to rethink urban distribution in particular.
